My girlfriend and I have been diligently saving our money for 10 years, with the dreams of moving our growing family (the fourth arriving as a late Christmas present!) to a larger house. Then, typically, 2008 struck, bringing with it the credit crunch and dashing our dreams of putting a deposit down on the dream home we'd found.
Not to fret though; We now live in a one off 4 bedroom townhouse. How you might ask? A loft conversion. There is no need to struggle with the ever changing property market when you can simply improve the home you already have? It's made our lives extremely happier and increased the size of our family home,
Your imagination is the limit when it comes to a loft conversion. You can make fantastic use of your current loft space for an extra bedroom or cinema room for the adults, a creative space for painting or music practise, another toilet, a home office or really anything you need extra space for. Personally, I've chose to have a new bedroom for William, my 7 year-old boy which he adores because it's a 'Hip to Gable,' loft conversion, this apparently makes it look like an 'outer spaceman bedroom,' with the gently slanted walls and the Velux windows.
We had total control when it came to designing and making suggestions as to the design of our loft space. We could have chose any type of design that took our fancy but opted for the 'Hip to Gable'. In addition to this, all the tradesmen who worked for our loft conversions company were very diligent, respectful and committed to ensuring the conversion was completed as quickly and professionally as possible, this is a tribute to the bespoke company I used.
A conservatory did cross my mind whilst looking in to expanding our home, a loft conversion makes the most sense. The loft space of your house can be professionally insulated and have plumbing, electrics and sewage installed so that you can live in it where as a conservatory is far less energy efficient and would be very awkward and unorthodox to house a bedroom. My conversion has increased the amount of live able space available in the house and my once was empty loft has now become another floor of the house.
The company suggested a way of installing my new staircase leading up to the conversion which means no loss of space as it's positioned right above the existing staircase. The design of the stairs blends in fantastically with the rest of my house and it seems as if the top floor has always been there.
With the crawl-spaces all the way around my new floor I still retain the space to put all of the equipment and boxes that were in the loft. It was such a good time to get rid of all the old rubbish that was not needed any longer.
Now all the work is complete, I'd recommend a loft conversion to anyone who needs extra space in their home and does not wish to stress about the volatile property market.
