Using Tissue Forceps In 2 Separate Ways

During needle extraction tissue forceps can be used in 2 seperate ways. Forceps can be used to grasp the needle before releasing by the needle holder, or the forceps can hold the tissue on the needle during the needle holder release, to prevent confusion of the needle from the tissue. Use forceps with "teeth" to stabilize tissue more successfully on the needle; use "smooth" forceps to grab needle more effectively for extraction.

If your using the tissue forceps for needle extraction, use this method when you grab the needle perpendicular to the shaft using the needle holder. Its perpendicular to the shaft when you using the needle holder. You have a more protected grab when if you use a perpendicular or oblique method. The perpendicular grab also allows a mere rotation movement of the surgical instruments to extract the needle, witout the need of shifting the axis of forcpes.

In many situations, tissue forceps & clamps can be used interchangeably in certain cases clamps & tissue forceps can be interchangeably. In order to have traction gain better exposure with a bleeding vessel its important to use a clamp or forceps. Forceps have an advantage over clamps as they can be more easily and quickly opened and closed, & the tension on tissue can be more specifically gauged than with clamps. Clamps, however, have the advantage of better grip and the ability to hold for an extended time without causing exhaustion.

Tissue forceps function as extensions of the thumb and opposing fingers. Grasp the forceps between the thumb and forefingers, be sure the metacarpal-phalangeal joint of the index finger rest along with the shanks in a pencil stance.

When switching back & forth using tissue forceps, as when sewing then tying, palm the tissue forceps while tying. In the palmed position grasp the forceps with the sublimis muscles, not the profundus. Change the forceps from the "hold" to the "use" position with the palm down, this allows gravity to drift away the forceps from the palm so the thumb & index fingers can easily re-grasp the forceps in the proper position.
